Restoring a Historic Stained Glass Dome From Boston to Carmel

Historic stained glass often carries a complex history, shaped by relocation, adaptation, and at times unintended damage. A recent project in Carmel, California exemplifies how improper installation and environmental exposure can compromise even the most robust glasswork—and how careful stained glass restoration can recover both its structure and visual impact.

Originally designed for the lobby of a Boston bank, this large stained glass dome was later transported to California and installed in a private coastal residence in the 1980s. During that transition, the dome was cut in half to accommodate the new architectural setting. While the adaptation allowed the piece to continue functioning as an architectural feature, it also introduced long-term vulnerabilities.

Environmental Exposure and Compounding Damage

For approximately four years, the stained glass was left exposed to the elements—an especially damaging condition in a coastal environment like Carmel. Salt air, moisture, and temperature fluctuations accelerated deterioration across both the glass and the lead structure.

Subsequent attempts to “protect” the piece created additional problems:

  • A silicone coating was applied over much of the glass surface
  • Plexiglass was installed over the panels without proper ventilation
  • Moisture became trapped, increasing internal stress and accelerating damage

These conditions led to significant issues requiring architectural glass restoration, including:

  • Cracking and weakening of glass
  • Compromised lead came and structural instability
  • Visual distortion due to coatings and trapped condensation

At this stage, the dome required far more than standard stained glass repair—it demanded a full stained glass conservation strategy.

Restoration Approach: Removing Damage, Preserving History

The restoration process began with careful removal of the panels and a detailed condition assessment. Because of the silicone coating and environmental damage, the project required both technical precision and conservation sensitivity.

Silicone Removal and Surface Recovery
Removing the silicone without damaging the original glass required controlled, methodical techniques. This step was critical to restoring clarity and allowing the glass to interact properly with light.

Disassembly and Cleaning
The panels were fully disassembled to address internal damage. Each piece of glass was cleaned using conservation-grade methods, preserving original textures and coloration.

Leaded Glass Restoration
The deteriorated lead structure necessitated extensive lead came repair and, in many sections, full stained glass re-leading to restore stability.

Glass Matching and Replication
Where original glass could not be salvaged, stained glass replication/reproduction was performed using materials selected to match the original design, color, and translucency.

Given the dome’s architectural function, reinforcement was essential. Structural improvements were integrated to ensure long-term durability, particularly in a coastal environment.

Reinstallation and Long-Term Protection

A critical component of this project was correcting previous installation issues. Unlike the earlier plexiglass covering, the reinstallation incorporated proper ventilation and protective glazing systems to prevent moisture buildup—aligning with best practices in heritage glass preservation.

The restored dome now functions as both a structural and artistic centerpiece, with light once again passing cleanly through the glass as originally intended.
