Glass Painting
Overview
Pictured here are some examples of commissioned projects created at Helios Art Glass incorporating traditional, kiln-fired stained glass painting techniques. Vitreous paint is applied by brushes, stenciling, or silk-screening, and then kiln-fired to permanently fuse the paint to the glass. This process can add depth and texture to the surface which is not always possible to achieve on unpainted glass.
Glass painting techniques can also be valuable in the restoration process. One of our goals in restoring stained-glass windows is to preserve as much of the original glass as possible. However, we sometimes see cases where too much original material has been lost, often due to vandalism or intense storms. Sometimes we treat panels which have seen some repair previously, but include poorly matching replacement pieces. In these limited cases, we recreate these pieces ourselves.
The vent window below was vandalized during a break-in. We referenced photos of the pre-damaged panel, as well as identical panels located elsewhere in the church. The panel was then recreated by matching the glass and paint, to the original.
