HELIOS ART GLASS
Restored historic stained glass dome in a Private Residence, Carmel CA residence featuring intricate leaded glass patterns and reinforced structural support following a full architectural glass restoration.

Private Residence, Carmel CA

Completed August 2021

Project Overview

Carmel, California
This project involved the restoration of a historic stained glass dome originally designed for a bank lobby in Boston and later relocated to a private residence in Carmel, California. During its installation in the 1980s, the dome was cut in half to fit the new architectural setting.

Over time, the glass experienced significant deterioration due to prolonged exposure to coastal conditions. For approximately four years, the panels were left open to the elements, resulting in extensive damage requiring full stained-glass restoration as well as wood conservation.

Additional complications arose from previous interventions. Much of the glass had been coated in silicone, and plexiglass was installed over the panels without ventilation. This led to trapped moisture, increased thermal stress, and further structural degradation—necessitating comprehensive stained glass conservation and stained glass structural repair.

Our scope of work included:

  • Careful removal of silicone coatings to restore glass clarity
  • Full disassembly, cleaning, and leaded glass restoration
  • Extensive lead came repair and stained glass re-leading
  • Stained glass replication/reproduction for damaged or missing elements
  • Reinforcement and stabilization of the dome structure

During reinstallation, we implemented improved protective glazing with proper ventilation to support long-term stained glass preservation, particularly in a coastal environment.

This project reflects our expertise in:

  • Stained glass domes and skylights
  • Complex historic building glass restoration
  • Conservation-driven custom glass design solutions
  • Large-scale stained glass structural repair

The restored dome now serves as a durable and visually refined architectural feature, preserving its historic character while meeting modern performance standards.
