Project Overview

This Romanesque Revival church, located at 240 Page Street in San Francisco’s Hayes Valley neighborhood, was built in 1909 and designed by architect August Klahn. Following its acquisition by Unity San Francisco in 2019, the building’s six primary stained glass windows were found to be in a severe state of deterioration.

Helios Art Glass was engaged to perform a comprehensive stained glass restoration program, spanning approximately two years. Each of the six windows were carefully removed and transported to our studio for full historic preservation treatment.

The scope of work included:

• Complete preliminary analysis & documentation of existing windows.
• Careful dismantling of all original materials.
• Care and preservation of original hand-painted elements.
• Faithful reproduction of any missing or badly damaged elements.
• Complete re-leading of all original windows panels.

Our approach always prioritizes retaining as much original glass as possible, while ensuring the windows can safely withstand future environmental stress. Where replacement was necessary, materials were carefully selected to match the original color, texture, and translucency.

The restored windows now serve as both functional architectural elements and preserved works of art—returning light, color, and historical continuity to this landmark San Francisco building.
