Project Overview

Helios Art Glass completed the stained-glass restoration of a trio of windows from a 1910 church in East Oakland after severe storm damage caused the panels to fail. The central figurative window—constructed with two layers of plated glass—sustained extensive breakage, with much of the glass blown into the interior of the church and additional fragments recovered from outside.

This project required comprehensive architectural glass restoration, including historic stained glass repair, stained glass structural repair, and full stained glass conservation.

Our scope of work included:

• Collection, cataloging, and cleaning of all recoverable glass fragments
• Detailed reconstruction using reference photography
• Extensive leaded glass restoration, including lead came repair and stained glass re-leading
• Stained glass replication/reproduction for missing sections
• Precision glass painting to recreate lost figurative details

A key component of the project was the restoration of the central figure’s face, which had shattered into 13 pieces with four sections missing. This required advanced glass art restoration techniques, including color matching, kiln-fired painting, and careful integration of new and original materials to achieve a seamless result.
